Peanuts, as well as, egg, cow’s milk, soy, sesame, fish, shellfish and tree nuts (walnuts, pecans, almonds, pine nuts) are common triggers. Trace amounts of these foods can cause anaphylaxis. In some extremely sensitive individuals skin contact or the smell of a food can trigger an anaphylactic reaction. Other causes of anaphylaxis are insect venom, medication and latex. All these triggers can have the same deadly effect as peanuts.

An allergy occurs when the body's immune system over-reacts to normally harmless substances, which may be in the air or water, or things we touch or eat. When an allergic person comes in contact with such a substance, their immune system produces a special kind of antibody (IgE) and other cells release further chemicals, such as histamines. This causes the symptoms of an allergic reaction.
