Allergy Northern Ireland
Allergy N I is a local charity formed in 2005, to support individuals and families with serious and potentially life threatening allergies by providing education, information, support and campaigning on their behalf.
An allergy occurs when the body's immune system over-reacts to normally harmless substances, which may be in the air or water, or things we touch or eat. When an allergic person comes in contact with such a substance, their immune system produces a special kind of antibody (IgE) and other cells release further chemicals, such as histamines. This causes the symptoms of an allergic reaction.
Peanuts, as well as, egg, cow’s milk, soy, sesame, fish, shellfish and tree nuts (walnuts, pecans, almonds, pine nuts) are common triggers. Trace amounts of these foods can cause anaphylaxis. In some extremely sensitive individuals skin contact or the smell of a food can trigger an anaphylactic reaction. Other causes of anaphylaxis are insect venom, medication and latex. All these triggers can have the same deadly effect as peanuts.
It is overwhelming, at first, to have a child with life-threatening food allergies. It may also be fearful for your child. This site provides you with some empathy and understanding along with some information, web site links, and books on the various food and other allergies that you might encounter.
